Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service.
Traditional observance of Memorial day has diminished over the years. Many Americans nowadays have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are increasingly ignored, neglected. Most people no longer remember the proper flag etiquette for the day. While there are towns and cities that still hold Memorial Day parades, many have not held a parade in decades. Some people think the day is for honoring any and all dead, and not just those fallen in service to our country.
Our little town still has a little parade to the local cemetery where the boy scouts have decorated the entrance with little flags. A speech and a gun salute conclude the parade and the band comes back into town and plays for those who wish to stick around.
I hope you have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day. And on that note I leave you with the following to remind us why we celebrate Memorial Day in the first place.
Yes, I lifted the above text, in color, from my mom's blog, who by the way is participating in a blog hop for Cards for Heroes. She has blog candy!!
